Focus on Holistic Wellbeing to be a Successful Designer



While the idea that a person’s wellbeing playing a critical role in the realm of design is not new, design experts have increasingly encouraged young designers to better understand the relationship between nature, human biology and the environment. The main reason being that the true essence of a designer is made up of one-part visual art, one-part business, one-part marketing and one-part psychology. The latter however, is more commonly overlooked by the vast majority especially in our increasingly urbanised world.


So, what is the psychology in design and why exactly is it so important? According to the science of design the psychological dimension is made up of these four qualities:


· The physical – referring to the obvious physical health and wellbeing of a person


· The social – the interconnected space of our world and society as a whole. This includes our interpersonal relationships, multi cultures, diversities and communities in our lives


· The ecological – our rich landscape and environment that surrounds us


· The emotional – referring to our emotions and our spiritual qualities that includes being empathetic and compassionate


It is said that designers who are able to balance and achieve a harmonious psychology or wellbeing can then produce more thoughtful designs for several reasons.


One of the most important one is that designers with a holistic approach are simply more aware of themselves and their surroundings – hence, having the ability to look both inwards on oneself and outwards to society is truly invaluable.


And of course, there’s also the fact that there is simply so much natural beauty in the world and so much inspirations can be taken from it if we only learn to appreciate it.
