Creative Problem Solving

Remember this phrase the next time you face a creative block: work smarter, not harder as it is a tried, tested and proven method to problem solving. It doesn't matter if issues arise at your workplace, back home or even during the day in class at fashion design schools. Learn to adopt creative, problem-solving strategies to discover unconventional ways to overcome your problems. Trust us when we say that a little creativity goes a long way (especially in the realm of fashion and design!).

1. Identifying problems

Though this may seem like a no-brainer, it is not uncommon for those struggling with an issue or problem to be slightly misinformed of the actual situation. So first things first, adopt an open-mindset and identify problems by viewing it as a challenge with clear objectives that lead to one end goal. Treat it as a mission not too dissimilar than the quests or missions in games. Take your time to analyse each aspect and uncover issues by asking questions like "how could my designs be better?"

2. Creative ideating

Here comes the fun part now that facts and problems are clearly identified. Consider approaching the situation with these techniques:

           - Adopt a third-person perspective. It's true that most of us give better advice to others and struggle to come up with suggestions for ourselves. So consider adopting a third-person view when facing problems and think of solutions as you would if a friend needed help in the same scenario. In other words, what advice would you give your friend if they encountered the same problems in that situation?

          - 'Work smarter, not harder' and think of the simplest, most straightforward and laziest way to solve your problem. Why? Because it's true that sometimes, the laziest and simplest ways are the most effective.

           - Come up with a list of the Worst Possible Solutions. As crazy as it may sound, the Worst Possible Solution method is part of the inverted search process in Design Thinking and works by helping designers understand what does and does not work. In doing so, they are able to have a more relaxed attitude towards the problem and gain an insightful analysis while generating more meaningful ideas.

            - Brainwriting, not brainstorming. The idea behind brainwriting is similar to that of a usual brainstorming session but, instead of speaking your mind, it is about writing them down and passing it around it so it can be expanded.

3. Action

Keep trying, testing and repeating until you find a solution.
