7 Tips To Help Convey Ideas Clearly

Just like many other industries, the fashion and design landscape relies heavily upon communication to effectively relay concepts and issues. And in an increasingly competitive market, the only thing that separates good designers and good ideas from the rest of the crowd is that: effective communication. So if you've ever heard of phrases like "Can you say that again?" or "Sorry, how?" whenever you're trying to present an idea then read on below to learn seven simple but highly effective tips that can help you speak your mind more clearly. Here's how:

1.  Use simple words to present concepts or ideas.

Generally speaking, all ideas are intrinsically complex in nature. So consider simplifying the language used to help others understand it better. Avoid (whenever possible) the use of jargons, technical words and steer clear of big and fancy words that do not add value to what you are saying.

2. Be concise.

When in doubt, keep it straightforward and concise. Using uncomplicated languages and explanations are proven to be far more effective than narrating every possible detail. Keep your points crisp and practice being concise by using Twitter's 140-character limit to begin to understand the effectiveness in brevity.

3. Spark curiosity with your words.

Ideas or concepts that catch people by surprise are often ones that are the most memorable. With that in mind, systematically increase people's interest by tailoring and organising your thoughts to form coherent stories with a beginning, middle, and end. One of the best advices I've ever received is this: facts tell but stories sell!

4. Connect your points with people's emotions

The winning recipe to convince anyone of your ideas is to make them care. Consider injecting some humour, emotions and answering the 'whys' before they ask.

5. Provide proof or data to back up your idea.

Science says that our brains are wired to remember concrete languages over others. So for instance, instead of saying "I know a lot of people that love minimalist clothing" you could say, "The project has found that over 86% of the participants are interested or have thought of purchasing minimalist apparel."

6. Deliver your ideas with other forms of media.

The delivery is almost as important as the contents of your ideas but if public speaking isn't your forte then consider using digital media/tools to help you present your ideas.

7. Adapt according to different scenarios and audiences.

Even if you've prepared and fool-proofed a presentation, always be prepared for last-minute changes. Being able to adapt and go off-script to adjust to different scenarios will ultimately help you achieve success.
